After show boat, hattie entered a new echelon of hollywood. She was not being given tar treatment. But already she began feeling a back lash from the black community. African American newspapers had been forcefully decrying the representation of black americans and hollywood movies. One columnist called for black audiences to boycott hollywood until the situation improved. In this climate, hatties career catapulted her to an lon of stardam that no member of her race had reached before. Also dooming her to criticism that she was a traitor to her race for the rest of time.
