John Major's Influence on the Conservative Party
Winning the election was a huge achievement. He got 14 million votes, that's more votes than Thatcher got. The other thing I'd give him credit for is at least initiating an ordinary peace process. But he did cock it up again later on and took Blair to revive it. They do feel similar in an odd way. People didn't want Johnson. They went for May. And people didn't want Hesseltine - they went for Major.
