In zarathustra's first speech, he says that any man who wishes to be free must go voluntarily into a madhouse. I have an idea that dostoyevsky's different understanding of madness was partly the result of his experience with gambling addiction. By now, he had been on heavy doses of opium and various sedatives for many years. And especially if you don't discipline yourself with a strict routine, you can start to lose track of time.
