Is D-Dimer Testing Required in PE?

The pulmonary embolism rule out criteria or per score is a validated decision that can reliably identify very low risk PE patients. D-dimer testing is often ordered in patients being evaluated for PE, but who should get it and why? If the patient present none of the eight item of the per score then the patient has a very low risk of PE - less than 1%.
