In a nuclear explosion, 50% of the energy goes into forming this shock wave. The atmosphere or water are mostly transparent to visible light. That's why we can see each other and we can see the sun because the atmosphere doesn't tend to absorb photons in this range that we can see. And then like 10% of theenergy in things like neutrons and electrons like other particles flying out like tiny bullets with high energy pass right through the atmosphere.
