Introduction

In 1644, the last Ming emperor hung himself as peasant rebels near the capital of Beijing. The Qing state founded by a semi-nomadic group of people from northeast China known as the Manchu's defeated the rebels and interned Beijing. One of these regimes was the Zheng regime, based in coastal Fujian and Taiwan, that fought the Qing until its demise in 1683. Joining me to talk about this fascinating regime is Professor Xing Hong, an associate professor of history at Brandeis University. His research on this topic has greatly informed his more recent project, which is on Chinese communities in Southeast Asia from the 17th to the 21st centuries.
