The Life of Spartan Women
Spartan women have more freedom than Athenian women in particular. One of the most famous Spartan women is Kyniska, an athlete who wins the four horse chariot race at the Olympic Games in 396 BC and again in 392. But a good Spartan is not supposed to value personal wealth or glory over the state. A man named Kynodon makes his way through the busy Agora, past stalls selling pork, fish, and barley cakes. The scent of her delicious food makes his belly squirm with hunger, but he has no coins to buy her wares.
