The story of York and his contribution to the expedition doesn't get nearly enough coverage. He was actually one of the most useful tools of diplomacy that they had on their entire journey. Writer Washington Irving, who's known for hyping up and whitewashing American heroes, so-called heroes, has put something in the historical record claiming that York was freed by William Clark. But in reality, it appears that York actually died of cholera while still a slave.
