There are some places, e g, where you do seem to assign relatively high credence. My favorite example is always dark matter. I think we have very good data that says there is dark matter. Some of those theories fit well with other ideas. So wimps are extremely popular because they fit ly well with many other ideas about physics beyond the standard model.
