Georgia Tan's Orphanage in Memphis
In 1945, in one three-month period, a pediatrician named Dr. Clyde Crosswell later said that 40 to 50 of her babies died from infant dysentery. By the mid-40s, Memphis doctors started to speak out about signs of physical abuse and how they'd worn Georgia Tan not to remove infants from the hospital's care. "She felt she knew better than the doctors"
