Set theory is a lot of things so at the most basic level it's exactly this taking this idea and running with it. cantor didn't stumble across this because he was having fun with infinite sets uh he stumbled into this as he was solving a problem in analysis about real numbers. So then we could understand sort of all of mathematics in this one world according to set theory.
