In 17 forty six, he had a book published called the unparalleled sufferings of john custos. This on paralleled sufferings of freemasons was very significant for one thing. It helped to present freemasons as co victims of the inquisition and co victims of catholic and papal persecution alongside protestants. And it also became controversial in portugal itself, although we don't know a lot because there wasn't a free press in portugal. So Portugal was the first flash point of this, but similar episodes happened over and over again in spain, in italy, and also in germany and austria.
