How to Choose the Right Stock to Add to a Portfolio

How many hours do you expect to spend greening and doing due diligence in a given stock when you consider adding it to a portfolio? I find that since research and learning can go on infinitely, it's hard to know when to finish the process and make a decision. A lot of it revolves around how much I know around an industry or a group of people.
