The rule of three formy elf, which i think i got from jeff atwood's coating horro blog, where he's like, you have to use something three times before you'll generalize it. I've found that it's usually that third use that points out how bad my abstraction is. So if that means erring on the side of duplication, then that seems to be kind of the most helpful for me. It doesn't always help you, but it does help me slow down a little bit. Ad maybe just like, bite the bullet one more time.
