If stuff is getting moved around or shuffled as it's loading, it could be perceived as taking longer to load. Google fonts now gives you a link preload as well as the font file. There's actually pretty good font stacks these days, especially now that Apple has San Francisco built in. And I think you can just do like a variable that will give you the nice system font system font.
