The Role of Facial Recognition in the Criminal Justice System
Most facial recognition systems work really well for white men and increase increasingly less well as you run down the privilege spectrum. In part because the British company that designed it probably did not have access to a lot of images of the type of people who would be on the southern border talking about like indigenous Mexican folks. And so the result we see with a lot of facial recognition systems is that a little bit of bias in how the facial recognition works gets amplified, amplified by social biases,. It's amplified by the biases of people who run the system, and people who interact with it every day. And then it's amplified by institutional blindness as well failure to recognize a problem.
