A lot of CTA's are based out of Switzerland, because they want to run some of these things offshore so that they don't have to disclose. Large pension funds or endowment funds from universities tend to look at these as an alternative investment. The promise of trend following over the last four or five decades has been that it should provide a relatively uncorrelated set of returns.
