The odds of making money in one year is 68%, but on a ten year basis, it goes up to 88%. Over the long term, investing is putting up with an enduring volatility. A lot of investors will view that volatility as a fine - like they screwed up and should not do this again. Once you realize that the fee is worth it, an it's not a fine, you're not in trouble. You don't do anything wrong if your portfolio goes down 20% then it just becomes easier to deal with volatility.
