Could You Drop Some Fusion Bombs Into a Mountain and Generate Energy?
Edward Teller and his family fled from Hungary during the Second World War. He was a key part of the Manhattan Project who helped deliver the hydrogen bomb. In 1952, he demonstrated that fusion energy could be used to generate power. A young scientist called John Knuckles asked him if he would drop these bombs into a mountain side. Could we use it to power a power station or kind of power a city? And you know, so all of the ideas were completely bonkers, even if they might have worked in some ways.
