In 1974, Mao is silenced by a degenerative condition. It makes him unintelligible to all but his personal nurse. Despite his feebleness, the Communist Party chairman remains untouchable. The fearful discipline he's instilled into his party and populace means that even though he's become incapable of leading the country, he is still unquestionably number one.
