The Photonics Advantage?

I don't know if this might be a really basic question at this point especially but I do want to ask very simply. What's the sheer advantage of photonics? Because it seems like you're doing so much more work and obviously that will pay off. That actually is quite fascinating because I was thinking about how you were trying to describe or describing metamaterials. So our understanding of all our limits basically is the only thing that's really stopping us from really moving forward.
