Hyperbolic Sheets and the Sea Slug
University of Arizona mathematician Shankar Venkotramani says his engineers pick the sea slug for inspiration. He says it kind of picked them when they began looking for hyperbolic sheets in nature. In a hyperbolic sheet, you don't have the property that two lines don't intersect only if they're parallel. So some of the very basic things that we take for granted in Euclidean or flat geometry are not true in hyperbolic geometry.
