Until the Meiji Restoration, these two great nations got along. Kublai Khan tried to annihilate Japan a couple times, but he failed to achieve his objective. Japanese pirates were a constant thorn in the side of the China coast because of so much shared culture. The Nanjing massacre has come to symbolize the whole period in history that lasted from 1937 to 1945.
