Metal Detection - Do You Need a License?
The vast majority of metal detecting is done on arable farmland. Within those farming landscapes, there will be protected sites like roman villas or anglo saxon cemeteries. Even the landowner cannot give a detectorist or an archaeologist permission to do works on that site without a license from historic england. The only way we would issue that license is if it was part of a structured archological research project. And they're very rare.
