How to Be Miserable
The Marine Corps teaches you how to be miserable. This is invaluable for an artist. Marines derive a perverse satisfaction in having colder chow, crappier equipment and higher casualty rates than any outfit of dog faces, swab jockeys, or fly boys. The artist committing himself to his calling has volunteered for hell, whether he knows it or not. He's doing a battle cry. That's why I say it could be misinterpreted. If you read the book the way he intended it to and you get exactly what he's saying, I think the book is wonderful.
