The Role of Bypass in Cardiac Surgery
Getting one in is going to happen in most cardiac cases when not contraindicated. There are two main parts to the bypass machine: a pump and an oxygenator. The surgeon will place a venous cannula that will drain the blood from the body into the bypass circuit. It goes into a reservoir where the blood will be filtered, warmed, cooled, oxygenated You can also add in drugs like vasopressors um volatile anesthetic And then it is returned back to the body via the arterial cannula which is placed typically in the ascending aorta.
