I have a question which is the origin of this parable. I've heard very differing things about whether this is actually a Native American parable story or not. Neither of us are Cherokee or from that nation, so I can't say for sure. But I would imagine that if it were a Cherokee proverb or story, there's probably a lot more to it than that small piece of it that is commonly shared.
