Is There a Technological Limitation Between Gold and a Network?

There was a technological limitation between gold and a network an economic network that could move they could span thousands of miles in seconds. That literally began with this telegraph with the radio well, arguably it started back in the 1500s and 1600s with like the Amsterdam purse. When you get into a an economy that moves so fast and can trade so many resources that does it predominantly in the virtual space it does it over telegraph or stock exchange where none of the resources are there. It's just a bunch of dudes holding up pieces of paper and screaming at each other in a big room  and suddenly it's divorced the reality and the trade are not the real thing.
