In December 2022, the Ontario de Fuego's legislative body unanimously passed a law that creates the peninsula, Mitre, natural protected area. The new law safeguards the largest carbon sink in Argentina and one of the largest concentrations of peat in South America. In their quest to connect with the landscape, they'd chosen the route less traveled, but that also meant variable conditions.
