The Importance of Moral Injury

A number of years ago, it became apparent that some inpatient oncology services at Stanford were worse than we wanted them to be. The reason for that was not because of substandard care, but the level of complexity of patients who were coming into the hospital wasn't being appropriately reflected as a quality metric. "Do I order that x-ray that I know isn't really necessary? Do I order the MRI that is really, again, not necessary?" he asks.
