We had the pleasure of interviewing Oceans Ate Alaska over Zoom video. Balance requires duality. As such, Oceans Ate Alaska thrive in the midst of extremes. The British quintet—James Harrison [vocals], Chris Turner [drums], James "Jibs" Kennedy [guitar], Adam Zytkiewicz [guitar], and Mike Stanton [bass]—ebb and flow between moments of elite metallic intensity, proficient progressive experimentation, and delicate lo-fi bliss. They plunge dynamic depths and surface with an utterly unpredictable and undeniable signature style meant to upend expectations at every turn. After tallying tens of millions of streams and earning acclaim from Alternative Press, New Noise Magazine, and more, the group perfect this balance on their third full-length offering, Disparity [Fearless Records]. Oceans Ate Alaska have carefully and quietly progressed to this point. Following their 2015 debut Lost Isles, they presented Hikari in 2017. "Hansha" amassed over 10.8 million Spotify streams as the album surpassed 40 million total streams. Along the way, they toured with the likes of Wage War, The Plot In You, We Came As Romans, Like Moths To Flames, and more. Throughout 2021, they assembled what would become Disparity. Inspired by a mutual love for the likes of Bonobo and Alina Baraz, collaborator Clem Cherry enhanced the production with airy beat-craft and immersive sonic accents.
