Paola dies three weeks after giving birth, she's thinking about motherhood. This sort of is almost like a prelude to those self-portraits pregnant isn't it? Yes absolutely, so this comes in the autumn of 1906 at the end of this year of separation and angst from Otto. So she leaves him in February 1906, goes to Paris, arrives in Paris and then they start this long long drawn out separation that ends up not being a separation. She wants it to be a separation, he can't let go, all her friends intervene and then she finally takes advice from a sculptor called Bernard Hotka who's also living in Paris and his wife. From their
