The Royal Menagerie at the Tower of London

The Royal Menagerie at the Tower of London was probably founded in 1204. King John brought three shiploads of wild beasts, lions, and leopards to England from Normandy. The monarch would receive the animals as gifts from usually other powerful rulers  to impress or to show the wealth and strength of a ruler. These otter animals were sent to London from all over the world and kept in the Tower ofLondon as a symbol of power.
