The Spice Girls' Girl Power
The Spice Girls may have been associated with female empowerment back in the day, but according to Mel C, they never initially intended to bring girl power to the world. The band used their public presence to push a sex positive message that wasn't being told by many other female pop performers in the 90s. Feminists were quick to pounce on the Spice Girls for using their platform to promote girl power. Feminist writers condemned the band for promoting a light and frothy feminism that they called feminism light because it detracted from real issues of gender politics.
