The History of the Modern Research University

The modern research university is no more than 233 years old this year. It was founded in 1810 in Berlin in the aftermath of a terrific military defeat by Prussia to Napoleon. The pursuit of knowledge would be at the heart of things across the university and the heart of the university would not be any professional school, but rather what they called the philosophical faculty. A university that even if funded by the state would be essentially autonomous in setting its own academic agenda.
