How Polio Made a President

The Art of Manliness

CHAPTER

Do You Think FDR Believed His Own Hype?

FDR had this remarkable ability to sort of believe things on one plane and then look at things as they really were. He understood that the conventional wisdom among doctors treating polio was that polio was an infection that would destroy muscle tissue. So in FDR's recovery, as he's trying to get back the ability to walk, year one goes by, year two goes by. But he doesn't get back the able to walk unaided and he really doesn't make the kind of progress that he wants at all. And he understands that that means from the doctor's perspective, he doesn't have a good chance of walking again on his own.
