In 1982 Ireland was shocked to its core when a young nurse was brutally murdered in Dublin's Phoenix Park. When the police tracked down the culprit there was another immense shock. Malcolm MacArthur had been hiding out in an apartment belonging to none other than the Irish Attorney General Patrick Connolly. The scandal was all-consuming and nearly brought down the government with the then Tishuk, Charles Hockey, coining an acronym that persists to this day. Mark McConnell's new book A Thread of Violence narrates these events from a new perspective. He persuaded Malcolm MacArthur to speak to him. What did he learn?
