Ulysses Grant grew up in an area of Ohio that's a hotbed of abolitionist activity. He marries into this slave-holding family and for five years from 1850, four to 1859, Grant worked as a farmer here in St. Louis on the Whitehaven property. At one point in time, he will obtain ownership of William Jones from his father-in-law, Frederick Det. But Julia had four slave laborers that were gifted to her from her father,. Those foreign slave laborers continued to assist the Grant family after William Jones was freed.
