Alfalfa Exports Aren't Tracked Super Closely

The Metropolitan Water District of Southern California pays around $1,000 per acre foot for Colorado River water. A farm in the American West can sell that alfalfa to local dairies and sometimes an export processor will come knocking. Alfalfa exports aren't tracked super closely, but our experts told us that today something like 15 to 20 percent of all the alFalfa grown under irrigation in the arid west of the United States is exported.
