The Deliberate Detachment of Scofield
For the first time in the movie for the camera to detach from the character, that was something we talked about. And so there's this sort of liquid light that moves across the ground or misses if it's not there at all. Dennis Gassner, who designed that remarkable town set, did so really almost as a giant lighting rig. He had to remove sections of wall so that the main light source of the sound could light Scofield's journey through these shattered streets.
