Water Companies Discharged More Than 400 Thousand Times Last Year
In total, untreated effluent was released into waterways for more than three million hours last year. Remarkably, this is allowed under what's called exceptional circumstances - like storms and heavy rains. But cam ners argue that almost half a million times is absolutely not exceptional. Water companies have discharged consents to use combined suwer overflows in extreme circumstances,. so as not to cause a back up in the system which could flood homes and businesses.
