Webster was inspired by a new guide to the English tongue in five parts by Thomas Dilworth. He used this book as his starting point, adapting it for American use. This became an immensely popular work and was widely used until about 1900 selling roughly 70 million copies. Webster's words quote: I have too much pride not to wish to see America assume a national character.
