The Evolution of Vocal Communication in Bats

Echolocation is a prerequisite for sophisticated vocal communication, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it evolved first. It just means that if you want to echolocate, you need really precise neural control over your vocal apparatus and larynx. If you have all this neural and vocal motor control in place, then of course, it's an ideal channel to also use for social communication. But nevertheless, if the situation is really crowded, bats make mistakes. Yeah. They've got a certain amount of information overload to juggle there.
