In Marxist theorizing, what's the whole point of politics? Just to defend the capitalist substructure. What's the entire purpose of the military to protect economic interest? That's why we go to war. Marxists will defend or describe every war ever fought as basically an economic struggle. The arts are patronized by wealthy people and the arts tend therefore to support and protect the wealth generating quality of the capitalist economy. Maybe most famously for Marx, religion. It's meant to drug us into a kind of you know, insensibility so we don't realize the pain produced by the oppressive system we're in.
