In the draft of the first two books of the Lord of the Rings, the region of the Ettonmores is called the Entish Dales or the Entish lands. At this stage of Tolkien's conception, Ent and Etton are interchangeable both with a bad sense. Then as the concept of tree beard and his people gradually emerges from earlier hints about tree men or tree giants, the two words part company. This can be seen in the plot plants. T-bird.
