The Importance of Rewards in Habit Formation

Rewards are important for habit formation because you're likely to repeat a behavior if it's rewarding. dopamine is a neurochemical that has many uses, but one of the effects of dopamine is to tie together information and memory so that it helps to form those habit associations. But in the last few years, I think we've seen sort of a breakdown between intrinsic and extrinsic reward in some of the research in the literature. So then it becomes, as we said, then you learn that co-variation between the behavior context and the reward and then that becomes tied into a habit.
