The word t h e. Back then spelled thorn e, but now the thorn looks like a lower case y. So even though you're looking at something that says th your immediate response is going to be e. Because older versions of english had more specific letters phonetically, it was much less confusing. But as time went on, and particularly as more modern people looked back at old writing, these very similar letters started to blend together.
