Can You Limit Cause and Effect?

Physicists say that space can bend, and that can somehow effect cause and effect. If you're near a black hole, your light cone is distorted. The bending of space determines which causes line up with which effects. But what if the curvature of space itself was uncertain? Would there be two possible light cones we could influence?
