There are several different reasons why phages have proven difficult to use in medicine. South African athlete Casta Samena is double 800 metre Olympic champion. She was born with differences of sexual development or DSD, and cannot compete without taking testosterone reducing drugs. In 2021, Samena took the case to the European Court of Human Rights claiming that the rules were discriminatory. However, it looks unlikely that this ruling will change the rules established by World Athletics. Dr Emma Hilton from University of Manchester explains how developmental biology can lead to an advantage on the track.
