The Sheriff's Rejoicing
The sheriff would have preferred that Thad had remained a fugitive. He did not want to self-confess murder on his hands, especially not one fresh from a Saturday killing in Port William. The place smelled of old paper and tobacco with a human being washed and unwashed. There was a row of chairs for people to wait in and several spittings placed at the presumed convenience of spitters that had been as much missed as hit. When he could see again, he walked to a door under a sign that said sheriff and went in.
